Why Great Recruiting Starts Before You Post the Job

Better hiring begins with defining the role, expectations, and measures of success before the job posting goes live.

When business owners realize they need help, the first instinct is often to write a job posting and hope the right person applies. But successful recruiting starts long before the job goes live.

SHRM recommends reviewing the job description before advertising an open position to make sure it accurately reflects what the business needs. If you don't know exactly what success looks like in a role, it's difficult to find someone who can deliver it.

Define What You Need Before You Start Recruiting

Before posting a job, ask yourself a few simple questions:

  • What problem is this position solving?
  • What outcomes should this person be responsible for?
  • Which skills are truly required, and which can be learned?
  • How will success be measured after 90 days?

The answers become the foundation for everything that follows, from the job description to the interview process and onboarding.

Too often, businesses rush to fill an opening because they're overwhelmed. That urgency can lead to vague job descriptions, inconsistent interviews, and hiring decisions based more on personality than qualifications.

The result? More turnover, more training, and another hiring process just a few months later.

Slowing down at the beginning often saves time in the end.

Make the Recruiting Process Intentional

A thoughtful recruiting process doesn't have to be complicated. It simply needs to be intentional.

Define the role, establish clear expectations, and create a consistent way to evaluate every candidate. You'll make better hiring decisions because you're comparing applicants against the same standard.

Hiring isn't just about filling an empty seat. It's about finding someone who can help move the business forward.

The best candidates aren't always the first to apply or the ones with the longest résumé. More often, they're the people whose skills, values, and goals align with what your business truly needs.

Great recruiting doesn't begin when you post the job. It begins when you understand exactly who you're looking for.
